What is a Special Needs Trust?
A special needs trust is created to ensure that beneficiaries who have a disability can enjoy the use of funds that are intended to be held for their benefit. It is a way for families and individuals to save money for the future while protecting eligibility to qualify for and receive government benefits.
The Developmental Disabilities Life Opportunities Trust (DDLOT) is a type of special needs "pooled" trust, called a supplemental needs trust, where the funds are pooled for investment purposes only and which meet all federal and state laws that allow beneficiaries to have a trust and still receive government benefits. A supplemental needs pooled trust is intended to be utilized to purchase goods and services not provided by a government benefit and not to replace or supplant any benefits the individual is entitled to receive.
